The Godfather

Remix

In “The Rhetoric of Remix,” Virginia Kuhn describes the remix as a way of expression in media.  A remix is as a digital argument that works across the registers of sound, text, and image to make claims and provides evidence to support those claims. In our remix, a compilation of numerous violent acts that took place in The Godfather serves as the image, and an Italian instrumental song serves as the sound.  We decided to merge these two specific mediums because we hope to emphasize the connection we are trying to make between the brutality of the scenes and the way Italians were portrayed in the film. There are many messages we are trying to get across with this remix. One message showcases the violence that occurs in the mafia lifestyle, specifically Italian-Americans. In today’s society stereotyping of different cultures is seen greatly in the media.  A typical stereotype that goes with an Italian-American is that they are mob associated, often linking them to crime. Another message of the remix highlights the recurring acts of violence being held up and supported by the patriarchy. Patriarchy is often defined as a system of male dominance. In the Godfather, patriarchy is a system of domination enforced through violence. The third argument we are trying to make clear is the relationship between crime and masculinity. We argue that males commit higher rates of crime than females and females are often the victims of the crime.
